mother of the revolution

mother of the revolution

Mother of the Revolution is a new folk musical celebration of the life of a forgotten Yorkshire legend – industrialist Betty Beecroft; unearthing her untold story and those of the working communities that came after her. This will be a show about what we share with our neighbours, what we learn from our past, what brings us together and tears us apart.

Mother of the Revolution is an archipelago arts collective production in association with Leeds Industrial Museum and Interplay Theatre; supported by Arts Council England, CEG, Leeds Playhouse and Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society.

All performances of Mother of the Revolution feature embedded BSL and integrated Audio Description. A pre-show access pack will be available to all audiences and the performance on Thursday 9th May is a designated Relaxed Performance and the performance on Saturday 11th May is a fully BSL interpreted performance. For more information about the accessible elements of the production contact Kirsty Pennycook on kirsty@interplaytheatre.org.uk.

Across each performance (of approximately 90 mins) audiences at Leeds Industrial will be transported across 275 years as they move across different spaces in the museum, with an underscore of live folk music and embedded British Sign Language.

When would I need to volunteer?
You would need to be available to support on the show on at least one performance across the following dates and times:
Thursday 2nd May: 5-9pm
Friday 3rd May: 5-9pm
Saturday 4th May: 5-9pm
Sunday 5th May 4:30-8:30pm
Thursday 9th May: 5-9pm
Friday 10th May: 5-9pm
Saturday 11th May: 5-9pm
Sunday 12th May: 4:30-8:30pm

Ideally volunteers would also attend the dress rehearsal on the afternoon/evening of Wednesday 1st May between 4-6pm to understand the production and the routes the audience takes.

What would volunteering involve?
You will welcome and steward the audience across the promenade performance. This will entail working with at least one other volunteer and venue and production staff to guide up to 30 audience members around the museum as the performance unfolds in different spaces; keeping the audience together and comfortable traversing different areas including potentially offering extra support to audiences with specific access needs. You will be volunteering with Archipelago rather than with Leeds Museums and Galleries.

We will be running a volunteer drop-in information sessions at Leeds Industrial Museum on Friday 5th April between 11am and 3pm, Friday 12th April between 1 – 2pm and Saturday 13th April 2:15 and 3:15pm.

If you are interested in volunteering on Mother of the Revolution we’d love to hear from you.

Please register by 22nd April by filling in the Mother of the Revolution Volunteer Sign Up Form linked below. If you need support filling in the form please email beth@archipelagoarts.co.uk.

All volunteers must be 18 or over.

Expenses: Out of pocket travel expenses will be reimbursed between home and Leeds Industrial Museum upon presentation of receipts or at 30p per mile if driving.
